Voter Registration

The Minnesota Secretary of State website provides information about voting in Minnesota.  Below are links to just some of the important voting resources on the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

  • Register to Vote: Register to vote online, print an application or check to see if you are already registered.
    • Restore the Vote Act: Starting July 1st of 2023, a felon that completes the incarceration portion of their sentence may register to vote, even if they are still on probation/parole.
    • Youth Pre-registration: Beginning June of 2023, youth that are 16 or 17 may “pre-register” to vote, regardless of whether they will turn 18 before the next election.
    • Automatic Voter Registration: Beginning December 2023, Minnesota residents that are also United State citizens will be automatically registered to vote when they apply for a state ID.
  • Election Day Voting: Find out where and what times you can vote and more.
  • Ways to Vote: Learn about mail-in ballots, absentee ballots and voting early.
  • Track your Ballot: Check to see if your absentee or mail ballot was received. Please remember to allow time for processing.

In Minnesota, you can vote early with an absentee ballot starting 46 days before Election Day. You can request an absentee ballot online for federal, state, and county elections.

As a reminder, Lake of the Woods County is a mail-in ballot county. If you are a registered voter, who lives outside of the City of Baudette, you should get your ballot by mail at the address you provided when you registered to vote.

Here are just a few reasons why a resident of Lake of the Woods County may want to request an absentee ballot:

  1. You will be away from home when your mail-in ballot arrives. Ballots are not automatically forwarded by the post office. If you need a ballot sent to a different address, please request an absentee ballot.
  2. Military and voters living abroad can use a special process to vote absentee. www.fvap.gov
  3. You live in the City of Baudette and would like to vote by absentee ballot, instead of going to the polling place on election day.

Absentee and Mail ballots may be returned by mail or in person up to and including election day. The Auditor/Treasurer’s office is open for early voting Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Refer to the chart for additional early voting opportunities:

Any ballots received after election day cannot be counted.

For more information about absentee ballots you can visit the MN Secretary of State website https://www.sos.state.mn.us/elections-voting/other-ways-to-vote/ or call the Lake of the Woods Auditor /Treasurer Office at 218-634-2836.
