The Records Division is responsible for processing and maintaining crime and arrest records, traffic accident reports, citations and related documents in order to provide information to other divisions within the Sheriff’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office, the Court System, other law enforcement agencies and to the general public.
Records are classified as confidential, private, and public. A determination is made by the Records Division staff, under State Data Practices guidelines, as to when a record can be released, who it can be released to, or whether a record can be released at all. Public information obtained within any report may be requested. However, the release of private, confidential, and non-public data will be released in accordance with Minnesota State Statute 13.82. There are also certain circumstances when a report cannot be released, such as when an investigation is ongoing; when the safety of persons may be jeopardized; or when investigative techniques may be disclosed.
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office does not release reports created by the Minnesota State Patrol, Medical Examiner’s Office or surrounding Law Enforcement Agencies. You will need to contact originating agency for their records.
