HOW DO I GET A PERMIT TO CARRY?
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for all permits to carry issued in the county. Minnesota residents must apply in the county where they reside. Out-of-state residents can apply at any Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota.
Permit to Carry applications may also be obtained in the lobby of the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office.
PROCESS
- Applicants must apply in person at the Sheriff’s Office.
- Applicants must present a current MN driver’s license, State issued ID or Passport.
- Applicants must be 21 years old.
- Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
- Applications must be filled out completely. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will be returned or denied.
- Applicants must complete authorized firearms training prior to, but no more than one year before applying for a permit to carry. The training must meet the requirements of MN Statute §624.714 Subd. 2a.
- It may take up to 30 days for approval dependent on the series of background-related checks used to assure that you are eligible to carry a firearm by State law. If your application is approved, your card will be mailed directly to your home address. If your application is denied, you will receive a letter stating why the Sheriff’s Office denied your application.
- A permit to carry is valid for 5 years and may be used to both purchase and carry firearms.
- The renewal process is same as the initial application with the exception of the fees.
- New permit to carry: $100
- Renewal permit to carry: $75 (an existing permit to carry can be renewed up to 90 days prior to expiration).
- Late renewal permit to carry (within 30 days of expiration): $85 ($75 plus $10 late fee).
- A permit to carry more than 31 days expired can no longer be renewed. It will be processed as a new permit to carry.
- Within 30 days after changing your permanent address the permit holder must notify the issuing Sheriff’s Office. Failure to provide notification as required is a petty misdemeanor.
- Present your current permit to carry and current, valid identification reflecting your new information, and a filled out application (page one only).
- Within 30 days of having lost or destroyed your permit card the permit holder must notify the issuing Sheriff’s Office. Failure to provide notification as required is a petty misdemeanor.
- If your card is lost or destroyed, the permit holder must provide photo identification, a filled out application (page one only), and a notarized statement that the card has been lost or destroyed.
